How To Choose Skid Steer Attachments

Recently, I needed an attachment for our skid steer loader that I just couldn’t decide whether it was the right size for my exact machine. Since many attachments for Skid Steers use the Universal Quick Attach, you might assume that you can just hook any attachment to it and it has to work.

That is not the case. What I found out after some internet research is pretty much the opposite. After watching some super informative instructional videos on how to size each particular attachment, I found out that the weight of my machine and it’s hydraulic flow play a major role in chosing the right size attachments.

Naturally, when people spend the kind of money that it takes to buy a Skid Steer Loader, you can’t help but want to think that the loader your own is herculean! If you bought a 100 horsepower track skid steer then, and only then, you are right. The only problem is that 90 percent of skid steer out there are way smaller and cannot handle the larger attachments, or ones that require high flow hoses and connections. The good part is that unless you are buying a forestry mulcher, or a cold planer for removing pavement, then most other attachments do not have high flow hydraulic requirements.

If hydraulics aren’t the issue, the only other issue is the weight of the attachment. If you bought a 96 inch six way dozer blade for the small 20 horsepower skid steer then you are about to be severly dissapointed. The best way to be sure that you are buying a good fit is to check your machines specifications for lift capacity, horsepower, and hydraulic flow. Then do the same for the attachment.

Getting the right fit for the Skid Steer loader is one of the highest priorities. After all, it wouldn’t work well to buy an attachment especially on the internet only to find that it did not fit your Skid Steer properly, and now you have a several thousand pound problem that needs to shipped back. Taking the time to pick up the phone and call these online companies is probably the most important advice that can be given. You can learn a lot from people who have used the product in question and also talk about what the intended use for the attachments are.

Skid Steer Loader Attachments – a Quick Guide

Like a Swiss Army Knife on wheels, a skid steer loader can support a huge range of additional attachments to enable it to be used for an unbelievable variety of jobs. Your standard issue skid steer loader comes with a bucket attachment, but its capabilities don’t end with just humping mud and dirt about. Here are just some of the attachments available for your skid steer loader, and a brief explanation of what they do.

Augers – These look like giant drill bits. They use the Archimedes principal to dig deep, clean holes for foundations.
Claws – hydraulic grapples that are used to grab and lift heavy objects.
Hitches – like the trailer hitch on your car. Attached to the back of the loader and used to pull trailers and so on.
Backhoes – a steel bucket attached to a rotatable hydraulic arm used for digging and scooping.
Mowers – for cutting the grass!

Dozer Blades – a large metal blade fitted to the front of the skid steer loader. Used for pushing dirt and debris..

Plows – like a blade but can have a curved plate at the top, or be angled in a v shape to enable snow or leaves to be pushed to the side
Rakes – for scarifying ground and gathering loose material like leaves.
Forks – same as you would find on a forklift, these blades are used to carry palletized materials and suspended loads such as heavy bags.
Trenchers – used for digging ditches or long trenches.

The list above is only a small selection of the hundreds of additional tools that you can buy for your skid steer loader. You will probably never need most of them in you day to day work, so it’s good to know that there are many hire shops around the country that will rent you specialist tools on a daily or even an hourly basis. Thanks to the skid steer “quick attach” system most of these attachments can be used on any brand of skid steer loader, although there are some exceptions so its worth checking suitability with your supplier before purchasing.

ISO 24410:2005, Earth-moving machinery – Coupling of attachments to skid steer loaders

Product Description
ISO 24410:2005 provides for the interchangeability of attachments on skid steer loaders by establishing dimensional limits for the attachment interface. It is applicable to skid steer loaders whose operating mass according to ISO 6165 is 4 500 kg or less. Narrow skid steer loaders may have a width that does not allow compliance. Its requirements do not restrict the design of the attachment bracket locking system, which is left to the discretion of the manufacturer. It is not applicable to attachment interface brackets connected to the attachment bracket by a lateral locking system. This title may contain less than 24 pages of technical content.
